The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Community Services, Western Region invites submissions for a Social Worker 2 position, that will provide services to the local cost centre:
- One Social Worker located in the Hamilton Area (Hamilton East and Mountain)

Opportunity:
Community Services, Western Region, is excited to be recruiting for a Social Worker position. This position is to provide professional social work services to offenders under community supervision, individually and/or in group settings. Service will focus on, but not be limited to, intimate partner violence, mental health, addictions, and criminal thinking to mitigate risk of re-offending.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO DO IN THIS ROLE?
In this role, you will:
- Work very closely with supervising Probation & Parole Officers to enhance programming and counselling to offenders using a trauma informed approach.
- Meet with offenders to address specific risk needs, in collaboration with the Probation and Parole officer, as identified by the comprehensive risk/needs assessment.
- Prepare and maintain appropriate assessment, progress, and statistical reports/records; e.g., psycho-social reports to support Probation and Parole officers in effective case management.
- Advocate on the offenders’ behalf for referral to additional services/resources.
- Support in-house rehabilitative programs and Core Rehabilitative Programs for the offender population.
- Provide rehabilitative addiction counselling services by working with individual or groups of diverse offenders, counselling in dealing with addictions and assisting in the implementation of individual treatment plans, maintaining appropriate records; developing pamphlets or other written materials to encourage participation of offenders in programs and maximize benefits of offender participation in programs, recommending awareness programs and self-help groups based on needs of offenders and parameters of programs.
- Working with intimate partner violence (IPV) offenders in the pre / post phases of Partner Assault Response (PAR) completion. To provide counselling, to assist individuals in developing relapse prevention plans, risk mitigation / alternate coping strategies, addressing issues of power and control, with a view to ending intimate partner violence.
HOW DO I QUALIFY?
Licensing:
Designation of Registered Social Worker in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
Knowledge:
Requires in-depth knowledge of theories, principles and practices of social work normally acquired through a Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) with significant work experience or Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) to develop rehabilitative treatment plans from a social work perspective and psycho-social rehabilitation/treatment theories, principles and techniques; e.g., psycho-social assessments, individual/group therapy, and development and implementation of program and rehabilitative plans to apply appropriate treatment to offenders.
Knowledge of relevant legislation, e.g., Ministry of Correctional Services Act, rules of confidentiality, program support services and to provide information and report observations to the Probation and Parole Officer. Working knowledge of computers and related software, e.g., word-processing software packages to input/retrieve data, prepare reports and maintain case documentation and statistics.
Skills:
- Requires analytical and problem-solving skills to gather and compile data from multiple sources; file history, ministry staff, and other external treatment professionals, to identify offender needs and develop or modify social work rehabilitative, treatment and case management plans in consultation with offender and Probation and Parole officer.
- Analytical and effective reasoning skills to assess and apply appropriate therapeutic intervention.
- Analytical skills to evaluate program treatment/services effectiveness based on composite of experience with crisis intervention, conflict resolution, counselling, therapy, observations of offenders.
- Excellent communication skills to carry out assessments and counselling sessions with offender, and to discuss issues or problematic cases with the Probation and Parole officer and/or community support services.
- Advanced written communication skills to prepare assessment, progress, and statistical reports.
- Interpersonal skills to advocate on behalf of the offender in the community. Tact, discretion, and sensitivity when discussing problems/options with offenders in crisis, maintaining confidentiality.
- Planning and organizational skills to manage own priorities, meet needs of treatment plans.
- Job requires keyboarding skills to prepare reports etc.
- Experience working with offenders or mandated clients an asset
