Are you passionate about equity, community, and supporting meaningful change? Green Haven Shelter for Women invites you to apply to the Board of Directors. This is an opportunity to use your professional expertise, community connections, and lived experience to help shape the future of a vital local organization. Board members are volunteers who play an active role in governance, organizational development, strategic planning, fundraising, and community leadership.
GHSW is entering an exciting period of organizational growth and development. We are looking for new volunteer Board members who want to help strengthen our governance, sustainability, community partnerships, and long-term vision.
ABOUT GREEN HAVEN SHELTER FOR WOMEN (GHSW)
Green Haven Shelter for Women provides safety, shelter, and supportive services to individuals affected by gender-based violence and abuse. Our mission is to create meaningful alternatives and opportunities for healing and change. Together with our community, we lead and inspire transformative social change to end gender-based violence—because everyone deserves to live a life of dignity, safety, and respect.
WHY JOIN OUR BOARD?
As a local organization, GHSW offers Board members the opportunity to see the direct impact of their work in our community. Our Board plays an important role in ensuring the organization remains sustainable, accountable, responsive, and positioned to meet the evolving needs of women and families experiencing gender-based violence.
As a Board member, you will:
- Play a key role in advancing safety and equity for survivors of gender-based violence.
- Contribute to strategic decisions that shape the future of our organization and community.
- Expand your leadership, governance, and advocacy skills.
- Collaborate with a passionate and committed team of change makers.
COMMITMENT & TERM
- Time Commitment: Approximately 4–6 hours per month for regular Board and committee responsibilities, with occasional additional time required for special projects, strategic initiatives, fundraising activities, or urgent organizational matters.
- Attend Board meetings held on the fourth Wednesday of every month
- Term Length: 2 years, with the option for renewal.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Board members are expected to:
- Participate in at least one Board committee (Governance, Fundraising, or Resource Development).
- Attend and actively contribute to Board and committee meetings, as well as the Annual General Meeting.
- Follow through on commitments and take initiative.
- Ask thoughtful questions and respectfully challenge assumptions.
- Work collaboratively through complex or difficult issues.
- Contribute their skills, networks, and time beyond attending meetings.
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR
We are committed to building a Board that reflects the diversity of our community. We especially welcome applications from individuals with diverse cultural, racial, gender, sexual, socioeconomic, disability, and lived-experience perspectives.
Previous Board experience would be an asset but is not required.
We are seeking people with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Fundraising (including advocacy, community engagement, resource development, and leveraging their professional and community networks)
- Human Resources
- Program/Social Work Experience
