1 Full-Time Permanent - Legal Counsellor/Advocate

We are looking for 1 Full-time permanent Legal Counsellor/Advocate to join our team and provide supports based on clients’ needs including legal supports, accompaniments to court and advocacy, access, information and referral to services and resources, risk assessment and safety planning, counselling, and emotional support.
What to Expect in the Legal Role:
- Provide advocacy and supports to navigate the systems and provide accompaniment to court and appointments with lawyers, police, etc.
- Respond to the needs of clients with information on their legal options regarding separation, divorce, custody, access orders for their children, peace bonds, restraining orders and child support orders.
- Familiarize clients with the court proceedings as applicable and act as a source of information on issues, processes, systems, services, and make referrals to appropriate community or legal resources.
- Complete all support documents and advocacy letters required to assist clients in reaching their legal goals.
- Crisis intervention supports and conflict resolution.
- Maintain confidentiality and keep accurate, detailed, and up-to-date case notes using the internal database system.
- Promote public awareness of the issues of gender-based violence through social justice advocacy.
- Utilize computer software including case management database system, Microsoft applications as required.
- Adhere to all Health and Safety Policies and Procedures as outlined by the organization to minimize risks.
- Perform other duties as assigned to ensure effective operation of Embrave.
- Critical and intersectional knowledge of systems, issues, challenges, and barriers and understanding of anti-oppression, human rights, and social justice.
- Understanding of the legal system, including Family Law, Criminal Law, and Immigration Law.
- Community and survivor centered.
- Practices accountability with clients, coworkers, partners, and management.
- Strong time management and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
- Prioritizes confidentiality.
- University or college education in a related field such as Human Rights, Social Justice and Legal Studies, Indigenous Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, Sociology, Assaulted Women’s or the equivalent in education and extensive experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to clients’ and their children’s issues and working within a Critical Race Feminist, Anti-Black Racism and Anti-Colonialism framework.
- Experience working with clients in areas such as poverty, violence, and homelessness.
- Understanding Gender Based Violence (GBV) as a complex social problem and the intersectionality of sexism, racism,classism, colonialism, homophobia, transphobia, islamophobia, sanism, etc. on clients’ and their children’s lived experience of violence.
- Knowledge and understanding of the systemic barriers experienced by clients and their intersectionality of oppressions i.e., Social Housing Reform Act; Mental Health Act; Landlord Tenant Act; O.W. Act, ODSP Act, etc.
- Strong understanding of anti-oppression, Human Rights, and social justice.
- Proven ability in case management and supportive counselling skills from a decolonizing approach.
- Strong knowledge and experience with Harm Reduction Strategies.
- Demonstrated experience in crisis support and ability to mediate conflict.
- Professional communication skills; dedicated to team building and strong organizational and time management skills.
- Current First Aid and CPR level C training is required.
- 2nd language an asset.
- ASL is an asset.
- Must drive clients to appointments and accompaniments and holds a G Driver’s License.
- Preference will be given to someone who identifies as an Indigenous person.
Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 9:30am to 5:00pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00pm to 7:30pm.
Salary: Hourly Rate $24.95
