The Relief Childcare Worker is responsible for assisting in the implementation of the Child Care Program in accordance with the goals of the department and the overall Association.


YWCA Bergamot is a 68 unit apartment building with an Early Learning Centre in North Etobicoke for single women and women-led families in need of permanent, affordable, supportive housing. The Bergamot ELC is a centre of excellence for early childhood development and licensed for 62 children ages 0 to 4. YWCA Bergamot demonstrates YWCA Toronto’s commitment to creating quality, affordable housing in which women and their children realize their dreams and move forward in their lives.


  • Follows age-appropriate daily routines for the children in accordance with the philosophy of the program;
  • Works as part of a team with program staff and volunteers to provide an integrated program that enhances the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of children; Implements a program geared to the needs of the children with concerns for their interests, special needs, strengths and pace of learning;
  • Establishes daily routines for the children in the program;
  • Works with the children in a group while maintaining sensitivity to each child’s individual
  • Communicates with parents on a regular basis concerning their children;
  • Ensures that the Health and Safety Guidelines are followed in accordance with the policies and procedures of the funders and YWCA Toronto;
  • Ensures appropriate notification of child abuse as required by the Child and Family Services Act in accordance with YWCA Toronto policies and procedures;
  • Advises the Manager of any incidents and issues of concern in the program;
  • Takes responsibility for maintaining an orderly and tidy Centre, clean equipment and tidy


  • An Early Childhood Education Assistant Certificate or recognized equivalent an asset (high school completion required);
  •  Early Childhood Education diploma an asset;
  • 1-3 years experience with children ages 0 to 6;
  • Skills and flexibility to work with various age groupings from 0 to 6 years;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills;
  • Knowledge of early childhood development, theory and practice;
  • Experience working within a multicultural environment;
  • Willing to work flexible hours within the hours of 7a.m. to 6 p.m. day Monday to Friday;
  • Second language an asset.
