Position Available: Relief Childcare Worker (Casual)

Salary: $20.99 per hour + 4% vacation pay, as per collective agreement.

Hours: Variable

The Red Door Family Shelter is one of the largest family shelters in the City of Toronto and has been delivering support services to homeless families, abused women and their children for over 35 years.

We are currently seeking Relief Childcare Workers in two of our shelters. All selected candidates will have a passion for our work and a commitment to the provision of excellent client services.

Overview of Position

Reporting directly to the Program Manager(s), the Relief Childcare Worker is responsible for creating a safe and welcoming environment; planning and implementing indoor and outdoor childcare programs for children (infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children) residing in the shelter, during all scheduled relief shifts.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with maintaining the Childcare room in a clean and orderly manner in accordance with Public Health standards
  • Assist the children with fine and gross motor skills, English acquisition, development of concentration skills, the promotion of creative expression and cultural orientation
  • Assist the children with the process of separating from the primary caregiver and offer emotional support when required
  • Approach parents and staff in an appropriate and professional manner, when accepting children into the Childcare and returning the children to their parent or to the staff
  • Ongoing observation and documentation of children’s progress and concerns
  • Maintain open communication with co-workers and supervisor regarding any children’s concerns, observations and programming
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Fulfill reporting/documentation requirements, within established deadlines for completion

The Ideal Candidate:

Candidates for this position will have the following experience and educational requirements:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in ECE, CYW, Child Studies, Education or other related field
  • Experience working with children ranging from infants to older youth
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Superb leadership skills, positive behaviour management style and ability to  apply creativity
