The Women's Centre (Grey and Bruce): Shelter Manager (full time)

Women's Centre (Grey and Bruce) is Hiring:

Position Title:        Shelter Manager  

Position Type:        Full-time (35 hours per week)

Reports To:            Executive Director

Position Summary:

As lead of the Shelter staff, the Shelter Manager is required to follow all service delivery standards, policies and procedures to ensure that program delivery is consistent with the mission, vision and counselling model of The Women’s Centre (Grey and Bruce) Inc. The Shelter Manager will manage all VAW Frontline Workers, Outreach, Maintenance staff and placement students.


Staff Management:

  • Provide leadership and oversee all direct service programming at the shelter
  • Effectively recruit, hire, orient and train new VAW Workers Outreach, and Maintenance staff 
  • Provide ongoing feedback, mentoring, development and training opportunities, appropriate recognition and discipline to Frontline staff
  • Complete annual performance evaluations of Frontline and Program staff
  • Update program job descriptions, policies and procedures as ministry standards change
  • Provide On-Call phone support after hours as a management team leader on a rotational basis
  • Compile statistical information as generated by the data base to identify service trends for  ministry reports
  • Ensure safe, confidential, respectful working conditions
  • Operates within the Shelter Program budget
  • Coordinate staff socials (approximately on a bi-monthly basis)
  • Provide support and back-up for staff to ensure comprehensive counseling, referral and advocacy services for abused women and children, based on a thorough understanding of The Women’s Centre service model
  • Actively participates in weekly case management meetings and provides a forum in which employees can raise new ideas, concerns, conflicts and suggestions regarding services and personnel matters.
  • Is a secondary contact to the Ministry of Community and Social Services on funding and program-related issues pertaining to the shelter
  • Be familiar with the VAW Emergency Shelter Standards set by the ministry
  • Ensure all client files and staff case notes are completed in accordance with ministry standards
  • Participate in development of policy, procedures & agency guidelines relative to service delivery

Placement Student Supervision:

  • Apply for, recruit, hire, screen, accept and supervise placement students 
  • Conduct assessments and observations of placement students
  • Collaborate with Frontline staff to complete student grading and official assessment procedures

Property Management:

  • Communicate and make recommendations regarding all property matters involving the Shelter Program
  • Ensures safety and security mechanisms are in place for the safety of staff, volunteers and clients
  • Additional tasks as relates to the organization such as Facility Management of the Shelter site
  • Management representative on the Occupational Health & Safety Committee

Agency Awareness:

  • Attend agency fundraising events as assigned
  • Assist with grant writing research and proposal writing
  • Speak at community events to raise awareness about Violence Against Women   
  • Attend internal and external committee meetings as directed
