Position: .20 FTE (7.5 hrs per week)

Hospice of Waterloo Region is a community outreach hospice serving the residents of Waterloo Region since 1993. Positive Space is a workplace free of discrimination and systemic barriers based on sexual orientation and gender identities. Position Summary:

The Positive Space Facilitator will engage the management, staff and Board of Hospice of Waterloo Region in a review of policies, procedures, and practices in the creation of a LGBTQ Positive Space workplace.

Role Responsibilities:

• Conduct an internal organizational audit/review/assessment of all HWR forms, processes, policies and practices to ensure these meet positive space standards and promote a positive space environment

• Facilitate the transformation of HWR culture and environment to be compliant with LGBTQ positive space

• Chair an internal HWR positive space committee with membership from staff, volunteers, and partner agencies

• Build internal capacity through development and delivery of Positive Space training

• Create training resources based on existing positive space tool kits, providing relevant information, dispelling myths, and highlighting heteronormative values and beliefs embedded in cultural norms

• Document the process for moving to a positive space environment and prepare presentations for sharing learnings

• Facilitate an on-going process for compliance with positive space recognized standards for physical space, print materials, and social media

• Support HWR in strengthening the relationship with the LGBTQ community members in Waterloo Region

• Leading staff and volunteer workshops to promote self-growth and understanding of barriers and concerns facing LGBTQ individuals involved in hospice palliative care and bereavement

• Provide leadership in HWR attaining certification as a Positive Space Position Prerequisites:

• Minimum five years’ experience in community based organization, group development/facilitation, and project coordination

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the issues facing the gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans-gendered, queer, gender variant and questioning community. Lived experience would be considered an asset.

• Understanding of hospice palliative care and bereavement

• Experience working in an anti-oppression framework including awareness of topics associated with heterosexism, homophobia, transphobia, heteronormativity, intersecting oppressions, invisible privilege and human rights

• Skill in developing and facilitating processes to explore core personal values and beliefs and societal norms

• Strong oral and written communication, critical thinking and interpersonal skills

• Experience in adult learning, teaching, and mentorship

• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team with excellent time management skills
