Women’s Advocate/Counsellor 

Relief Position North & South Locations

Our Mission is to provide shelter, support, counselling and advocacy to help abused women and their children to break the cycle of violence. Interim Place provides services in a manner that honours the diversity of women and their children.  We are committed to a philosophy of feminism, anti-racism and anti-oppression. Interim Place operates two emergency shelters for women and children who are leaving abuse. We also operate a Community Support and Outreach Program (CSO) for women in the community who have experienced violence.   Interim Place is a community based feminist women’s organization committed to social justice and anti-oppression.

We require Relief Women’s Counsellor Advocates to assist in the support to women and their children who have experienced and/or are experiencing violence and provide support, programs and services to women and children who are residents of the shelter.

Responsibilities

Counseling; Information & Referral - (over the phone and in person)

  • Provides crisis support and counselling 
  • Completes intake and assessment 
  • Completes Risk Assessment and Safety Planning 
  • Provides transition planning and assistance (from home to shelter, shelter to community; shelter to shelter)
  • Provides information and referral to community supports and services i.e. government agencies; court services; etc.
  • Provides practical support in accessing information and resources
  • Case management support
  • Co-facilitation of support groups from women impacted by violence
    • Attends all staff meetings and training sessions as assigned

 Social Justice Advocacy, Community Education and Outreach

  • Demonstrates an understanding and knowledge of systems including legal and immigration; and related legislation i.e. Social Housing Reform Act; Mental Health Act; Landlord Tenant Act; O.W. Act, ODSP Act, etc.
  • Maintains knowledge and understanding of the systemic barriers experienced by women and the intersectionality’s of oppressions
  • Conducts public speaking engagements to promote public awareness and fosters understanding of the organization, its mission, and vision, as well as issues surrounding violence against women and the impact on children
  • Promotes and maintains cross-sectoral relationships and liaises with the community

Administration

  • Maintains appropriate and accurate file documentation and uphold the confidentiality of client’s file, subject to legal and policy parameters
  • Utilizes computer software including case management database system and Microsoft applications as required
  • Maintains petty cash

Health & Safety; Security

  • Adheres to all health and safety policies and procedures as outlined by the organization to minimize risk 
  • Addresses daily routine duties as required for facility maintenance and safety i.e. conduct room checks; fire drills; maintenance resolutions
  • Performs other duties as assigned for the effective operation of Interim Place

General

  • Works co-operatively as a member of the women’s counsellors and child & youth support team
  • Attends regular relief team meetings, staff training sessions and planning meetings
  • Assists with other duties as required, from time to time, aiding in the efficient operation of the organization

Qualifications:

  • Post-Secondary diploma or degree directly related to the position and 2 years of directly related work experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to women’s issues and working within a feminist/anti-racist and anti-oppression framework
  • All responsibilities will be performed in keeping with the philosophical framework set out in the Mission Statement, Values, and Objectives of Interim Place
  • Experience in working with women, children and youth in areas such as poverty, violence, and homelessness
  • Strong counselling skills including assessment, outreach, information & referral and advocacy support
  • Leadership, time management, organizational, problem solving and decision making skills
  • Ability to understand and respect the confidentiality of Interim Place, partner agencies and women, children and youth
  • Ability to understand and respect the confidentiality of Interim Place, partner agencies and women, children and youth            
  • Strong team working skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, conflict resolution skills and abilities
  • Current First Aid and CPR training is an asset
  • Solid knowledge of computer
  • 2nd language an asset. Proficiency in French language is preferred
  • ASL is an asset
  • Driver’s License Required
  • Ability to work rotating shifts such as days, evenings, overnights both during the week, weekends, statutory holidays and short notice shifts

Hours:  Rotating shifts such as Week and Weekend Days, Evenings, Overnights and Statutory Holidays.
