OAITH presents Two Webinars in March 2018

Wednesday March 7th 11pm to 12noon
Understanding the Impact of Gender Based Violence and Children and Youth

Gender-based violence is a global issue, largely impacting on women and girls – the most frequent victims of gender-based violence. This presentation will look specifically at the issue of exposure to gender-based violence in families on the development of children and youth. Some discussion of how issues of dating violence, homelessness, and human trafficking also come into play when gender itself becomes the risk factor for violence against young people.

About the Presenter: Angelique Jenney, PhD, RSW is the Wood’s Homes Research Chair in Children’s Mental Health at the University of Calgary and Associate Director of the Safe & Understood Project, Child Development Institute.  Wood’s Homes is a multi-service, non-profit children’s mental health centre based in Calgary.  Having started her work in this field in a women’s shelter in a small community, Angelique has over 20 years of experience working in intervention and prevention services within the violence against women and children’s mental health sectors. Her research and program development is devoted to understanding and responding to the impact of relationship violence on children and their caregivers.

Thursday March 8th 12noon to 1pm
OAITH and Centre for Excellence in Women's Health present a cross-Canada panel discussion:
The role of anti-violence workers in discussing substance use.

Trends such as cannabis legalization, ongoing binge drinking patterns and high levels of use of prescription opioids by women with violence concerns, invite refreshed consideration of the role of violence workers in discussing substance use with women. This presentation will describe what we know about the provision of trauma-informed brief support on substance use issues with women, and highlight examples where violence services are offering such support.
