Support our call for a National Action Plan on Violence against Women!

In 1990, Canada declared December 6th the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women. Over 20 years later, Canada still has no National Action Plan to End Violence against Women!  It's time to demand one.

The United Nations has recommended that every country in the world develop a National Action Plan to end Violence against Women by 2015. Canada needs to start now.

Every six days in Canada, a woman is murdered by her spouse. We know that Aboriginal women experience violence at twice the rate and homicide at almost seven times that of non-Aboriginal women.

On any given day, over 8200 women and their children are living in emergency shelters and transition houses to escape violence in Canada.  Violence against women costs Canada an estimated $6.9 billion per year in terms of social services, healthcare, and legal aid among others. Stop the cuts to Community Start-up and Maintenance Benefit!

In January, the Ontario Government will cut in half the funds to help low-income women leave abusivePhoto End Women's Poverty banner relationships. This cut is no way to balance the provincial budget. Help reverse this unfair decision!

Here are some things you can do:

  •  Call, email and/or fax your local provincial MPP and tell your representative this cut is misguided and mean. You can find your local MPP contact information HERE.
  • Attend one of the local events planned to protest the cut to Community Start-up:
    • Sudbury: October 10th
    • Ottawa: October 11th
    • Toronto: October 17th
