Please call the Premier's office and your MPP. A request for an injunction to stop destruction of gun registry data
for Ontario was denied. In Quebec, a judge has granted an injunction requested by the Province. Premier McGuinty has been asked to intervene to protect women and children in Ontario, but has not made a request for Ontario. We need our government to take a stand NOW!
Time is getting short. The deletion of the data is set to begin in less than two weeks for all but the information for Quebec. While women's groups have taken action in absence of government leadership, this data will help to protect all Ontarians. We need the government to know that their silence will have consequences.
Please the Premier and your MPP at 416-325-1941 TODAY and tell them:
- There are more 2.1 million long-guns in Ontario and the data on those guns is useful to police, providing a starting point for investigations, helping to bring criminals to justice and supporting the prosecution of gun-related crime.
- Without the registry and records of sales, long-guns are now completely untraceable in Ontario. On top of the criminal implications above, there is also less incentive for gun owners to report thefts or store their guns responsibly when the gun can no longer be traced back to them.
- The Quebec government stood up for public safety in their province and was victorious. Ontario should do the same. The Quebec Court decision reaffirms the fact that the data on guns is useful, that the province which contributed to collecting it is entitled to keep it and that it is in the interests of public safety to maintain it.
- While the government of Ontario has refused to take action, Ontario public safety experts and victims of gun violence, along with the cities of Toronto and Mississauga and the Region of Waterloo called for the data to be saved in the interest of public safety.
